Cate Blanchett Loves Sharing Her Work with Her Kids

When Cate Blanchett and her director husband Andrew Upton first had kids, they wanted to keep her work and family life totally separated. But, as their three boys got older, they realized the kids wanted to be a part of what their parents did. Now, they love getting to participate in mom and dad’s working world.

She said: “It’s a very, very difficult job to do with children, and I think in our first year we were trying to quarantine them from what we do so their lives were hermetically sealed and they didn’t feel the impact of our work.

In the end what we do is actually really interesting for children: it’s about dressing up, creating characters, telling stories. It’s social and it’s often nocturnal and, while they have to go to school, they’re old enough now – particularly the two older ones – to bring them into that.”

The 41-year-old beauty also revealed she tries to educate her children about making sacrifices and appreciating the things they have. She explained to Mindfood magazine: “Every single time you go to the supermarket with your children they come up to you and say, ‘We need this, we need this.’ You say, ‘Do you really need that? OK, you can choose three things you absolutely need in this whole supermarket that sells about 7000 products.’
